The brand is very popular so customers are usually aware of their product drops and keen on trying them all out. Among the hottest launches from the brand are their SuperStay Matte Ink liquid lipsticks, which have gained quite a reputation for being long-lasting, insanely pigmented, and stubbornly smudge-proof, all at an affordable price of Rs 650. So, we decided to test drive these babies, and see if the rumours about the products’ miraculous ability to last through meals, rich payoff, and affordability are indeed true. Shade range and intensity of colour payoffThere are some lipstick collections which have shade ranges that scream Caucasian, but this one doesn’t even go into pale territory, despite the existence of some very pretty nudes. The intense pinks and reds aside, there are loads of unique browns, maroons, and even purples in this collection, giving each complexion category a whole bunch of lipsticks to choose from. In India, however, not all the shades are available. The complete range includes blue and grey lipsticks as well, in addition to some hues yet to launch here.The payoff from each shade varies but it is uniformly opaque across colours, barring the streaky yet gorgeous eggplant colour, Believer, which can be a bit patchy. The rest go on and stay on without moving. That brings us to our next point.Longevity and formulaThis is a matte lipstick, as the name suggests, so one expects it to be long-lasting, and it definitely delivers. Removing this lipstick, in fact, is a task, so don’t try to take it off with mere soap and water because you will need an industrial-strength oil cleanser for this.The formula itself is thick and feels rubbery when it goes on. So, when you apply the liquid lipstick, it sets into an ink-like texture which comes off a little if wiped with something like lip balm. And, it definitely stays on through meals, drinks, and kisses. This is because the pigment rubs off layer by layer, making it hard to take the whole thing off in one go. That’s what improves its longevity.Finish and textureThe finish of this lipstick looks really good on the mouth, and the texture is such that it evenly covers lips without bleeding because it isn’t runny or clay-ey despite being a liquid. However, this lipstick range is cakey and heavy, especially if you look closely.As mentioned above, there’s something tacky and rubbery about the finish of this lipstick, which makes it different from most other long-wearing matte lipsticks. It lacks the dry finish of powdery matte formulas and has the subtlest hint of a sheen, making it look more ink-like, as the name suggests. So, if you press your lips together, they often stick together because of the glue-like finish. So, even though it’s quite neon, it looks sweet and flattering.DancerA warm-toned red which leans tomato, this colour is great for those who have orange, gold, red, or pink undertones, despite the seemingly universal golden undertones of this colour. Olive-skinned people and those with blue undertones might want to reconsider buying this!BelieverA plum-y eggplant, this is a gorgeous colour--if only it went on evenly. As is often the case with purple pigments--be it eyeshadow or lipstick--this one is hard to work with and apply without streakiness. If you can manage to apply it, though, it looks glamorous enough to amp up your entire look.SeductressEveryone loves a good nude given how we’re living in the age of the Kardashians, and this lipstick is an ode to that. A pale, true-nude hue, this is best for those who want a very light nude. It can wash you out, though, if you’re not wearing blush or have heavy eye makeup on because it is quite light. VoyagerA wine lipstick with ever-so-slight ruby undertones, this is great for parties and evening wear. Sure to look good on dark skin tones, it’s a plummy maroon instead of spicy brown, so those who prefer a more oxblood-like, cool-toned wine colour will like this. ianA most unwearable looking colour in the bottle, this is a unique and beautiful colour once worn. A rich, warm-toned brown, it looks great on olive skin and is perfect as an earthy addition to a neutral look.HeroineThis intense orangey-red hue might look like it is not for the faint-hearted, but it is a very sweet, bright, juicy pinkish-red, sort of like candied tinned melons. Hence, it looks really fresh on the skin.PioneerA grown up, blue-toned true red which is perfect for lovers of M.A.C’s Ruby Woo, this is sure to become a favourite with those who like a slightly darker, rich red which looks mature and intense, like a power colour.ProtectorA very dark brown, this colour is not for the faint-hearted. It is the exact colour of dark chocolate, so it definitely looks dramatic. However, like most other dark shades in this range, it can be hard to apply neatly and evenly, so be careful while painting your lips with this!LoverThis mauve-toned pinkish-nude is sure to be a colour many will love. Is it the most original shade? No. But it is something a lot of people would like to own and wear on a daily basis. What makes Maybelline SuperStay Matte Ink liquid lipsticks worth a buy and whom are they best suited for?If you’re looking for a long-wearing, budget-friendly matte lipstick, this is the best option in India right now.
